Following the announcement that Buddy Goode has received an ARIA nomination for his album The One and Only Buddy Goode, the singer’s feet have barely touched the ground. The nomination for Best Comedy Album is all the sweeter for the company of his fellow nominees: Adam Hills, Tim Minchin, Josh Thomas, Hamish & Andy – acts that read like a who’s who of Australian Comedy. So what is Buddy Goode doing in such esteemed company? It’s a good question, and one which was on everyone’s lips at the ARIA nomination event (although it was expressed in slightly more colourful language).
Quite simply, this popular crooner and showman has released a world-class album that features some of the most original comedy songs you will ever hear! If you haven’t heard Buddy’s oeuvre – do yourself a favour and experience The One and Only Buddy Goode.
Buddy Goode’s musical prowess is beyond reproach; equally, his output as a songwriter has been recognised by some people. New songs like Cougarville are already modern comedy classics, and the playful Jimmy Likes Dick is so catchy it will have you whistling the tune by the end of the first verse. Songs such as Unforgiving Wind and Blow Me will win the hearts of purists everywhere, while the lyrical musings of Country Member and Dickens Cider will have the whole family singing along.
In the words of one critic, the album is “as politically incorrect as you can get. I thought humour like this died out with the cavemen!” Another observed: “This thing is just so wrong that I can only see it appealing to people who enjoy humour of the basest kind – if you still laugh at fart jokes and gags about sexual conquests gone wrong, with a healthy dose of Are You Being Served?-style innuendo, then this album is for you!”
