Meet Our New Signings - Baby Velvet, Jamie McDell and Melanie Dyer!

In an unprecedented turn of events, ABC Music has had three amazing new artists join our family over the past month. You’re going to start seeing (and hearing) a lot more of them so we thought you should get to know Baby Velvet, Jamie McDell and Melanie Dyer a little better!

Baby Velvet

You might recognise Baby Velvet, aka Hannah Crofts, as one quarter of ARIA award-winning group All Our Exes Live In Texas. Well, now the Melbourne-based multi-disciplinary artist is stepping out on her own with the ultra-smooth single ‘Call Me’.

Accompanied by a Thelma and Louise, rhinestone cowboy of a music video, the gloriously gritty and softly heart-wrenching tune has set the tone for Baby Velvet’s debut album which is slated for release in 2022.

The first album I ever bought was…When I was 12 I was obsessed with loving whatever my older, and very cool, sisters were into (I have three older sisters and I’m the baby). To impress them I got my mum to take me to Northlands Sanity and buy me the latest Slipknot album for my Christmas present. On Christmas Day, at a beach house my parents had rented, I opened up the CD/put it on and was so terrified of it I ran and hid it under my mattress and never touched it again. I hope it is still under a mattress in a rental along the great ocean road.

The best gig I’ve ever seen was…Ohhhh remember seeing live music?! I have been running my mind through all the amazing gigs I’ve been to - part of me thinks maybe the best ones were my early Big Day Out experiences. Mostly because I was a little teen who got to see Iggy Pop/The White Stripes/The Magic Numbers/The Flaming Lips - like what a wild set of gigs to go to so young and feel so inspired. Also, just me at 13 in raver pants, a bucket hat, dog collar and chuck tailors.

My favourite artists right now areI’m obsessed with LA singer songwriters Dr. Kinsey & Jenny O, Ruby Gill, Maple Glider, I’ve actually made a playlist of what I am listing to right now.

Jamie McDell

New Zealand native Jamie McDell kicked off her music journey as a certified wunkerkind, being signed to EMI at the age of 16. Her debut album ‘Six Strings and a Sailboat’ was an unmitigated smash, achieving Gold album sales and winning Best Pop Album at the NZ Music Awards. She went on to gain global attention when her 2015 track ‘Moon Red Shines’ was featured on US series Pretty Little Liars.

Now with three albums under her belt, ABC Music was lucky enough to help Jamie release her stunning 2021 single ‘Dream Team’ from her forthcoming album.

The first album I ever bought was…I'm not one hundred percent sure, it was either the Phantom Of The Opera soundtrack, Green Day 'American Idiot', or Mariah Carey 'Music Box'My taste around the age of ten was all over the place.

The best gig I ever went to was…Roger Waters, The Wall

My favourite artists right now are…Julia Jacklin, Madi Diaz, Phoebe Bridgers. Female voices with vulnerable lyrics and perspectives we haven't heard before.

Melanie Dyer

Melanie has been making waves in the Aussie country scene since 2015 but you probably know her best from her 2019 smash hit ‘Memphis T-shirt’. She released her debut album ‘Fresh’ in 2017 which saw her Morgan Evans co-written title track hit #1 on The Australian Official Country Hot 50 chart for five consecutive weeks and the accompanying video #1 on CMC Australia.

She’s stepping into 2021 with her ABC family and a brand new single ‘Run Out Of Road’!

The first album I ever bought was…As a kid I remember getting a new album for Christmas each year - it was my favourite thing to unwrap! Early on, I loved Delta Goodrem's 'Innocent Eyes' and Avril Lavigne 'Let Go'. The album I distinctly remember saving up for though was of course Taylor Swift's debut album.

The best gig I ever went to was…Taylor Swift's '1989 World Tour' in Sydney. Somehow my friends and I were let into the VIP media area and I could almost touch her hand! Another memorable gig was Kacey Musgraves's sideshow at Oxford Art Factory when she came out to Australia for CMC Rocks. It was so intimate and It was just before she really blew up! I remember being in awe of her songwriting and ability to connect.

My favourite artists right now is…Miley Cyrus - Her latest album 'Plastic Hearts' is insane and she's one of my favourite vocalists. I'm also loving Ingrid Andress. Her song 'More Hearts Than Mine' will have you in a million pieces. Aussie duo Seaforth are on high rotation too!
