Four Indigenous artists that you need in your musical rotation

You might know Deadly Hearts as the album collection that features some of the best Indigenous artists Australia has to offer. We thought we'd take you through just a handful of artists that you need in your playlist.

Thelma Plum

A proud Gamilaraay woman, Thelma has been delighting Australians with her tunes since she took out triple j’s National Indigenous Music Award (NIMA) competition in 2012.

Fast forward seven years and a couple EPs and the world was blessed with Thelma’s debut album Better In Blak. Peaking at #4 on the ARIA charts, the album was nominated for six (six!) ARIA awards and picked up a shiny statue for Best Cover Art with Emilie Pfitzner.

Better In Blak’s title track stormed to #9 on the 2019 Hottest 100 making her the highest ranking Indigenous artist ever in the countdown.

Baker Boy

Danzal Baker, otherwise known as Baker Boy, exploded onto the scene in 2017 with his single Marryuna. The track led to Danzal taking home the triple j NIMA award for that year and he has not stopped since.

Reknowned for rapping in both English and his first language Yolŋu Matha, Danzel had made two appearance in Hottest 100 countdowns, toured with 50 Cent and was crowned the 2019 Young Australian of The Year. Not bad for an artist with a handful of singles to his name.

Tia Gostelow

Back in 2015, at just 16 years old, Tia’s track State Of Art caught the attention of triple j unearthed earning her a place in the top five of Unearthed High.

Since then she’s played at the likes of BIGSOUND and supported artists like Frightened Rabbit, Husky and Bernard Fanning.

Her debut album Thick Skin arrived in 2018 and took out Album of The Year at the 2019 Queensland Music Awards – making her the youngest recipient of the award EVER.

Following in the footsteps of past winner Tia Gostelow, Albion Park songwriter Aodhan won the triple j Unearthed Indigenous Initiative for 2019.

The 15-year-old won over the judges with his coastal folk track When Your Eyes Speak. He’s uploaded a number of other tracks that have had spins on both triple j and triple j Unearthed.
