ABC Classics signs pianist Jayson Gillham
ABC Classics is delighted to announce the signing of a three-album recording deal with brilliant young Australian pianist Jayson Gillham.
Gillham is one of the brightest stars in the new generation of international musicians. He grew up in Dalby in rural Queensland, travelling 500 kilometres every week to attend piano lessons with Leah Horwitz in Brisbane. Gillham continued his studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music before relocating to London in 2007 to pursue a Masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music.
Since then, he has received significant plaudits for his playing, as well as invitations from some of the world’s leading orchestras and concert venues. Gillham has given concerto performances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra and English Chamber Orchestra, and in Australia with the Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras. In June 2014 he was awarded first prize in the Montreal International Music Competition; and he has been a finalist in other prestigious piano competitions including the Leeds, Van Cliburn and Chopin Competitions. Conductor Sir Mark Elder has commented that he plays ‘with a sort of glow ... always a lovely sound – gorgeous’.
Gillham’s debut album will comprise solo works by JS Bach, Schubert and Chopin, and will be recorded in June 2015 at the Kulturhaus Reitstadel, the concert hall in the German town of Neumarkt renowned for its stunning acoustics. Andreas Neubronner, whose numerous recordings include Murray Perahia’s solo albums, will produce and engineer. The recording will be released globally in 2016–17.
Gillham commented: ‘I am very excited to be working with ABC Classics. They have sought and listened to my artistic input every step of the way, which is refreshing and empowering. This debut album represents everything I stand for and believe in as a musician – beauty, vitality, joy! These are pieces I have grown with over many years and are cherished favourites. Beauty of tone is of vital importance in helping the music come to life and so I am absolutely thrilled to be recording with renowned Tonmeister Andreas Neubronner, who has produced numerous stunning solo piano recordings such as those by Perahia and Volodos.’
Toby Chadd, Manager of ABC Classics, added: ‘ABC Classics has been following Jayson’s career with keen interest since, as a 16-year-old, he performed a Beethoven concerto as part of an ABC masterclass. His prodigious talent was immediately obvious, and he has blossomed as a musician in the decade since then. His playing is already astonishingly mature and elegant, and the beauty of sound he coaxes from the piano is a rare treat. His debut album will provide the perfect showcase for Jayson’s talent, taking us on a journey through some of the most eloquent music for solo piano. ABC Classics is delighted to be a part of the next chapter in his career.'
