7 Deadly Covers To Kick Off Your NAIDOC Week

July is here! Which means NAIDOC week is just around the corner. We wanna make sure you kick off the week right so we're digging back through some of our favourite deadly cover tunes to give you the ultimate NAIDOC playlist.

'Tjitji' - Ziggy Ramo ft. Miiesha (Miiesha cover)

Ziggy Ramo is quickly becoming one of the most powerful songwriters of his generation. For his 2020 Deadly Hearts contribution he took Miiesha’s ‘Tjitji’, a beautifully simple interlude from her 2020 album ‘Nyaaringu’ and transformed it into an impactful rumination on the roadblocks young Indigenous people face when trying to thrive in their home nation. His performance of ‘Tjitji’ live on The Sound is, to put it plainly, a revelation.

'Black Boy' - Emily Wurramara (Coloured Stones' cover)

For the debut Deadly Hearts outing, singer-songwriter Emily Wurramara went big by thinking small. She took Coloured Stones’ classic 1984 single ‘Black Boy’ and stripped it way back to percussion, acoustic guitar and her sparkling vocals. It’s heart-breaking and encouraging all at once and has garnered more than 1.5 million streams since we were blessed with the tune in 2017.

'Dumb Things' - A.B. Original Ft. Paul Kelly & Dan Sultan (Paul Kelly cover)

It’s a hard task to upstage Australian treasure Paul Kelly but powerhouse duo Briggs and Trials aka A.B. Original pulled it off with their mic drop Like A Version of ‘Dumb Things’. Taking ol’ mate PK along for the ride, A.B. Original set the triple j studios alight – we’re talking harmonica solos, a Dan Sultan feature and a message that makes you want to get up and fight for a better world.

'Neon Moon' - Miiesha Ft. The Woorabinda Singers (Brooks & Dunn cover)

An organ, some finger clicks and some of the most stunning harmonies you’ve ever heard in your life; This is all Miiesha needed to completely metamorphize Brooks & Dunn’s ‘Neon Moon’ into a neo-soul dream. Featuring a choir from her hometown of Woorabinda, QLD, Miiesha’s ‘Neon Moon’ manages to feel incredibly intimate and entirely universal at the same time. Prepare for goosebumps.

'Around Here' - Tia Gostelow (Thelma Plum cover)

There’s no better example of game recognising than up-and-comer Tia Gostelow covering Thelma Plum’s breakthrough single ‘Around Here’. Tia scuffs up the tune a bit, adding some lo-fi vocals and fuzzy synths but retains the cheeky heart of what is and always will be a bloody excellent indie-pop gem.

'What's Luv?' - Dallas Woods Ft. Kee'ahn (Fat Joe and Ashanti cover)

You want early 2000s nostalgia? Look no further than Dallas Woods and Kee’ahn practically becoming into the deadlier versions of Fat Joe and Ashanti for their triple j Like A Version of ‘What’s Luv?’. It’s smooth, it’s cool, it’ll make you wish that low-rise jeans and glittery blue eyeshadow were still in fashion (if only for a couple minutes).

'Beds Are Burning' - Southeast Desert Metal (Midnight Oil cover)

This blistering cover of Midnight Oil’s ‘Beds Are Burning’ comes courtesy of Santa Teresa shredders and self-proclaimed ‘most isolated heavy metal band in the world’ Southeast Desert Metal. Unashamedly heavy, “Time has come/a fact’s a fact/ it belongs to us/now give it back” takes on a whole new meaning when sandwiched between in-language chorus’ and fire guitar solos. Sit back, strap in and get ready to have your face absolutely melted off.

Listen to these tunes and so many more on our Deadly Hearts playlist.

"They gave him back in a potato sack" - The Story of 'Restless Dream'

It’s estimated upwards of 1000 Aboriginal remains are held in museums around the world.
