The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and their Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis continue their acclaimed survey of the orchestral music of Richard Strauss, with this latest volume featuring three world-class soloists – James Ehnes, Daniel Müller-Schott and Christopher Moore – performing two of his finest early works: the Violin Concerto, and the tone poem Don Quixote.

Performed here by dual Grammy Award-winning Canadian violinist James Ehnes, Strauss’s Violin Concerto is a beautiful and inventive work, remarkably mature considering Strauss wrote it when he was still a teenager. Strangely seldom performed today, it is full of melody and of virtuoso fireworks, very much of its Romantic time but hinting at the recent Classical masters Beethoven and Mozart.

Don Quixoteis inspired by Cervantes’s iconic novel, and Strauss demonstrates every bit of his flair for the dramatic (which would be fully realised in his great operasDer Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten andSalome). With Daniel Müller-Schott’s cello representing the famous man of
La Mancha, and Christopher Moore’s viola cast as his trusty sidekick Sancho Panza, Strauss takes us on an incredible journey into the mind of this deluded nobleman, and across the rustic landscape of the Don’s native Spain.

The MSO’s Strauss series was launched in 2014 with a major European tour including the BBC Proms and the Concertgebouw, and has so far included Four Last Songs with Erin Wall, Ein Heldenleben, Four Symphonic Interludes, Also sprach Zarathustra, Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks and An Alpine Symphony. The recordings have won significant acclaim from the international press, with BBC Music Magazine describing Also sprach Zarathustra as ‘a benchmark recording’.

Her exquisite voice and sensitive, nuanced phrasing draw out all the beauty, melancholy and humour in these songs, combining effortlessly with Harry Mitchell’spiano playing and arrangements.These songs are effortlessly brought into the jazz sound world thanks to Mitchell’s arrangements, and some superb playing by Ben Vanderwal (drums and percussion) and Karl Florisson (double bass). Allira also is a member of Gian Slater’s vocal ensemble Invenio. Allira received an Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album for her debut record Rise and Fall.Harry Mitchell has been playing piano since the age of eight, and playing jazz since the age of 13. Since then, he has performed with many artists across Australia and overseas, including Vincent Gardner, Kate Ceberano, George Garzone, Vince Jones, Troy Roberts, Jerome Jennings, Veronica Swift, Charlie Watts, Katy Steele and many more. He has played on numerous recordings including the Hank Marvin record Without A Word, the recent Jamie Oehlers album Night Music, and the Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian band CD Spark.  In 2017 he was awarded Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year at the Australian Jazz Bell Awards, as well as being awarded Jazz Song of the Year at the2016-17 and 2017-18 West Australian Music (WAM) Awards, and Best Pianist at the 2017-18 and 2018-19 WAMs. Harry has released three albums with his standards band TrioTrio and four albums of his original quartet/quintet music.Ben Vanderwal is one of the most in-demand jazz drummers in Australia. From an early age he encountered the legendary drummer/teacher Frank Gibson Jr, who helped unravelled the mysteries of that strange, fascinating music – in Perth, of all places. Originally from there, Ben has also spent time in New York and Melbourne and performed around the world including tours of the UK, France, Ireland, India, USA, China, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Japan, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Thailand. He has played with John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Howard Levy, Madeleine Peyroux, James Morrison, Chris Potter, George Garzone, Kate Ceberano, Mark Murphy, Ernie Watts, Lionel Rose, David Campbell, Rhonda Burchmore, Nigel Kennedy, Don Burrows, Deborah Byrne and Normie Rowe. Ben has performed on over thirty recordings with a wide variety of artists.Karl Florisson is one of Perth’s most in-demand bassists. David Greco and Erin Helyard continue their acclaimed explorationof Schubert’s great song cycles.Following their 2018 recording of the great song cycle Winterreise, David Greco and Erin Helyard continue their exploration of Schubert’s songs with their new recording of Die schöne Müllerin. Composed in 1823, it is one of the earliest extended song cycles, and one of Schubert's most important works.This iconic work follows a young miller, his unrequited love for the miller’s beautiful daughter, and the brook that seems to speak to him and reflect his growing sadness back at him. Listen to the first single from the album here.Be transported back in time to the salons of 19th-century Paris by one of Australia’s finest historically inspired ensembles.Acclaimed period-instrument ensemble Ironwood revive the sounds of the French Romantic through works by Louise Farrenc and Camille Saint-Saëns. These wonderful piano quintets provide contrasting glimpses of the rapidly changing tastes of mid-19th-century Paris, from the Schubertian Classicism in Farrenc’s piece to Saint-Saëns’ incredible work that seems to move from the Baroque to Blondie (yes, really!) via cabaret and the shimmering sounds of early Hollywood.Ironwood’s novel interpretation of these works reflects the ensemble’s research into historical performance practices, informed by very early acoustic, electrical and piano roll recordings – including some by Saint-Saëns himself – and by contemporaneous written texts by French and Belgian musicians. Through this research, coupled with the sounds of gut-strung stringed instruments and an original Érard concert grand piano from 1869, this recording re-imagines the expressive sound world that these composers envisaged for their sumptuous music.Louise Farrenc is a remarkable figure, a composer, pianist and teacher who was incredibly influential in her own lifetime – especially unusual for a woman in the early 1800s. In 1842 she became the first female professor to be appointed at the Paris Conservatoire, where she taught piano for thirty years and was successful in fighting for pay equal to her male colleagues. A star during her lifetime, her music was largely forgotten during the 20th century, but the resurgence in interest in female composers in recent years has seen herworks restored to prominence. This is the first recording of her work released on ABC Classic, and possibly the first-ever Australian recording.Camille Saint-Saëns is far better-known today, with works such as Carnival of the Animals and his Third (‘Organ’) Symphony frequently recorded and performed. Though these works have assured his place in the mainstream of classical music, during his lifetime he was a progressive and ground-breaking composer, foreshadowing elements of composers in the French group known as Les Six and even Stravinsky.Ironwood is a renowned Australian period-instrument ensemble admired for its historically informed exploration of repertoire from the late Renaissance to the late Romantic eras, as well as its support of newly commissioned works. Established in 2006, the ensemble draws on a wealth of experience and expertise, bringing together specialist leaders in the field. Ironwood has presented at the major festivals and concert series around Australia and has toured Europe and America. With several innovative recordings on the ABC Classic and Vexations840 labels, Ironwood is regularly broadcast nationally on ABC Classic and around the world. ABC Jazz is excited to announce the release of I Wrote A Song For Her, For Me, the debut album by Jayden Blockley. This is gorgeous, old-school music-making – a quintet of friends collaborating to create something new and pure.One of Australia’s rising jazz stars, Blockley was the winner of the 2018 Generations in Jazz James Morrison Jazz Scholarship. In recording this album, he gathered an incredible group of musicians from all over Australia to create their unique sound. Recorded with the ABC’s Mal Stanley in Melbourne in July 2019, this is the sound of a mature and exciting young songwriter and group leader emerging before our eyes.Jayden writes, “There is liberation and reward to expressing your feelings into a creative process, whatever form it may take. Being creative is such an undervalued quality of our humanity, and the creative process wasn’t something that I appreciated until embarking on this project. I didn’t consider myself much of a writer before this record and writing music wasn’t something that felt entirely natural to me, but it’s been the single most rewarding experiences of my musical journey. I’ve come to realise that even if there was nothing in the world to dedicate my songs to, I’d still write them because it’s the process of creating something meaningful to me that I cherish so much, hence the title I Wrote A Song For Her, For Me.Many of my tunes are inspired by my experiences growing up in Perth and the subsequent struggles and homesickness after moving away to study. Bao was written for my mum when I was feeling particularly homesick one day in Mount Gambier. It’s become an unofficial tradition for us to make dumplings together every time I come back home. I grew up on a road calledDarwinia Loop, so Darwinia is a tribute to some of my close friends and neighbours who I share fond memories growing up with. I didn’t originally intend for the album to be about my home in Perth, but it’s what I'm reminded of every time I hear it, so for me, this record is also a tribute to all the things I love about the home I grew up in.Assembling the musicians on the record was like putting together my dream team of people I really wanted to play with. When planning for the project, I considered recording in Sydney and in Perth, but eventually decided Melbourne was the best option simply based on my vision for the personnel.Will Pethick and I grew up playing together and have lived together for a few years whilst studying in Mount Gambier. We’ve developed a trust and great understanding of each other’s phrasing and sound, which worked perfectly for the amount of rubato writing that I did. He knew exactly how and where I wanted to place the notes. Theo Carbo has been someone I’ve wanted to play with ever since I met him. He brings such a vibrant palette of sounds and textures, which really brought my songs to life. I’d played with Patty Danao for a few years through uni and heard him play many times with James Morrison’s band. Patty has such a deep sense of groove and plays with a sensitivity that I knew would be perfect in this band. Sam Anning, as well as being the ultimate bass player, was one of my compositional inspirations. He was immediately onboard with my vision for this music, but also helped take it to places I couldn’t have imagined at first.All the players on this album have such a unique musical voice and they each get such a beautiful sound out of their respective instruments. Multi award winning vocalist Jasmine Rae has announced her new album ‘Lion Side’ will be released on July 24th. The brutally honest songwriter and electrifying live performer has also released the video to her current single ‘Green Light’.‘Lion Side’ is a culmination of several years of soul searching, rigorous and often tortuous self-assessment, indecision and the need to find greater inner-purpose and direction. Ultimately, Jasmine Rae has rediscovered that her true path to self-enlightenment is through her music.“I took a long time to make this album, but ultimately I simply had to do it,”says Jasmine Rae.“Music has always been my way of thinking out loud and figuring things out.
