Beethoven Piano Concertos 1 & 3 (Chamber Versions)

The drama of Beethoven transported into the intimate spaces of the Classical world. 

The Australian Haydn Ensemble, acclaimed for their fresh and vibrant performances of the music of the Classical era, bring their deep knowledge of historical performance techniques to Beethoven’s first and third piano concertos to play them as they would have been first encountered by audiences of Beethoven’s own time: as chamber music, for a small ensemble that could comfortably fit into a private home. In an era without recordings, most music lovers discovered the works of the great composers not by hearing them, but by playing them. These arrangements by Australian scholar Vi King Lim are patterned on the hugely popular chamber editions of Beethoven and Mozart symphonies by London-dwelling Italians Cimador and Masi, which graced the libraries of every music-loving household at the turn of the 19th century.

Led by charismatic frontwoman and primary songwriter Lizzie Mack, The Soul Movers are a supergroup of sorts, featuring twoARIA Hall of Fame inductees, guitarist Murray Cook (The Wiggles) and keyboardist Pip Hoyle (Radio Birdman). Originally formed by Lizzie in conjunction with Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman), the group has evolved over the years, with the line-up including original bass player Andy Newman and drummer Darren Ryan, coming together to record Testify!Keeping it in the family, the album was recorded at the legendary Hot Potato Studios, and features cameos other luminaries including Jeff Fatt (The Wiggles, The Cockroaches) and Amanda Brown (The Go-Betweens).The band’s sound encapsulates the essence of retro soul, filtered through a contemporary lens, in the vein of iconic contemporary artists such as Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and Amy Winehouse. Lead single ‘Fool I Am’, is a classic 60’s-inspired pop tune about the lure of love.“To testify means to show evidence of something you believe in and hold to be true. So here is our experience; how we live, we love, we wonder, we question and we survive. Testify! is indeed our musical proof,” – Lizzie Mack (feel free to change this quote) Having toured internationally earlier in the year to North America, including performances at SXSW, the band will be returning to play in Europe in 2018. More recently they have been performing sold-out shows in Sydney and now unveil a series of new live show dates.

‘Lux Aeterna’ – ‘eternal light’ – the struggle of light and darkness: an ancient concept, inspiring music-making for centuries.The new album from Australian composer Paul Stanhope brings this search for light into the present day, setting texts from across cultures and ages: Arabic poetry, Old Testament verses, liturgical chants, and present-day words from Australia and South America. Absorbing simplicity, transcendent serenity, deep spirituality. Into Silence, the new album from pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska, immerses us in the sound world of an extraordinary generation of composers from the Baltics: Henryk Górecki (born Poland, 1933), Arvo Pärt (Estonia, 1935), Pēteris Vasks (Latvia, 1946) and Georgs Pelēcis (Latvia, 1947).As Europe emerged from the horrors of World War II, Górecki and Pärt were children, while Vasks and Pelēcis were soon to be born. All four grew up in Soviet-dominated Eastern Europe, and their music looks back to the trials of the preceding years and speaks with hope of the future, all the while responding to the frost-shrouded landscapes in which it came to life. These composers grappled with cultures in which music was simultaneously highly prized, but bound by strict social and political constraints. From the rare genius of these four men, this set of conditions produced music of astonishing and distinctive beauty, characterised by profound simplicity and a true valuing of the silent.The album interweaves the intimacy of solo piano with concertos and orchestral works, recorded with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra under Johannes Fritzsch – himself brought up behind the Iron Curtain.The music of Georgs Pelēcis is an undiscovered gem, barely recorded and almost never heard in the concert hall. His All in the Past, an elegy for violin and orchestra, beguilingly mixes the influence of tango with the styling of the baroque; but it’s his sublime Concertino bianco (literally ‘Little White Concerto’) for piano and orchestra, which opens the album, that is set to take its rightful place as a gem of 20th-century music in this stunning new recording from Cislowska.Inspired by Gregorian Chant and Orthodox Christianity, the music of Arvo Pärt reaches towards the ancient at the same time as forging new paths in serenity. The use of simple rhythm and stepwise melody that he called ‘tintinnabuli’ (Latin for ‘bell ringing’) produced the exquisite Spiegel im Spiegel, and its almost addictive repetitions are shared by his other solo piano works on this album, Pari intervallo and Für Alina.The landscape of his Latvian homeland underlies Pēteris Vasks’ music, finding comfort he was never afforded as the son of a clergyman in a strictly secular regime. In his music for solo piano, the simple gestures of White Scenery evoke the calm of a snowbound landscape, while in Music for a Summer Evening – written in 2009 – we feel the serenity of dusk. In Cantabile, for string orchestra, we move from the contemplative to ecstatic climaxes.Henryk Górecki became a household name in the 1980s after the phenomenal success of his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, which made him the highest-selling classical composer of modern times. His Three Pieces in Olden Style shares the luminosity of that chart-topping work, while his Piano Concerto finds a more urgent sense of movement, echoing the rhythmic impulse of baroque dances.Tamara-Anna Cislowska’s recordings have won, amongst others, the 2015 ARIA Award for Best Classical Album and Gramophone Magazine Editor’s Choice. She recently toured as a soloist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

The album was made over a twelve-month period at locations around Tasmania and predominantly recorded with producer Chris Townend (Augie March, Daniel Johns, Tim Finn, Portishead) at his White Light studio, located on the edge of Tasmania’s Huon Valley.Back Yourself continues some of Salter’s long held thematic preoccupations – love, dreams, Armageddon, video games; the ocean and the stars; the intersection of myth and science; and the nature of reality itself.“Isolationism” the first single from the album was written with long time Gin Club collaborator Conor Macdonald, whilst final track “End Of Days” was written in Lyttelton with NZ songwriter and performer Marlon Williams.Back Yourself features guest appearances by well known Australian guitarist and songwriter Jeff Lang, Peter “Blackie” Black of underground legends The Hard Ons, and Something for Kate drummer Clint Hyndman.

Unfortunately.After a reckless lie sets off a catastrophic chain of events, Ali, the son of a Muslim cleric, finds himself caught between his sense of duty to his family and following his heart. An irreverent and warm-hearted comedy, Ali’s Wedding is an affectionate and entertaining story of love and duty.A film with such emotional scope requires a soundtrack to match, and so Nigel Westlake – composer of beloved scores including Babe and Paper Planes – was approached by the film’s director Jeffrey Walker. This album brings together highlights from the score, and boasts a line-up of musical artists that together have won over a dozen ARIA Awards.As well as bringing the film to life, Westlake’s music explores some of the more complex and subtle aspects of Ali’s adventures. As the composer says, “Although the score is firmly planted in the symphonic language of the ‘romantic comedy’ genre, it also seeks to provide musical context to the deeper and contemplative aspects of the story, particularly Ali’s insecurities concerning his past, culture and religion.”The oud – a short-necked lute-type instrument (and a pre-cursor to the guitar) – lends a distinctively middle-eastern flavour to the score, and is played here by acclaimed oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros. Guitarist Slava Grigoryan also appears on this album, on the track ‘In Loving Memory’, an expansion of a musical moment from the film. And singer Lior completes the trio of stellar guest soloists, with a new recording of a movement from Compassion, the hugely acclaimed song cycle he co-composed with Westlake.The Ali’s Wedding Original Soundtrack was recorded by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the composer. In this work Skipworth challenges the conventional wisdom that winds are more difficult to blend than strings, combining the five instruments of the wind quintet in a truly groundbreaking way. Flute and oboe become "floboe", horn and basson become "bassorn" in a way that simultaneously befuddles and enthralls the ears.
