Top Pop Hits From Australia's Favourite Tenor

Having made his name in 1992 as Rodolfo in Baz Luhrmann’s famous stage production of La bohème, tenor David Hobson’s career went into the stratosphere in the following decade through his winning appearances on the television shows It Takes Two and Dancing with the Stars. While taking his classical audience with him, David’s new albums showed him equally adept in the field of pop. And now, the best of those chart-topping recent albums are collected in the Best Of David Hobson.

From the gentle nostalgia of Cinema Paradiso to the pure pop of A Little Closer and The Promise, the gorgeous Celtic balladry of Enchanted Way, and on to You’ll Never Walk Alone, his inspiring collaboration with Teddy Tahu Rhodes, these albums showed David’s unique talent for musical crossover.

‘I’ve recorded so many different styles of music over the years that it’s not possible to present my whole career in a single album – there’s an inevitable risk it would end up spreading itself too thinly in some genres,’ says David. ‘After much discussion we decided to concentrate on the recent albums for this first compilation.’

From the searing pop ballads Fields of Gold and Wicked Game to immortal folk tunes Raglan Road and Loch Lomond, this is music that David sings from his heart.

‘These are songs that I love,’ he says, ‘and they are songs that I know have meant the most to those who’ve heard them. I still sing many of them in concert and each one conjures up for me special memories and emotions.

‘It’s been well over 20 years since my operatic debut and I treasure my relationship with classical music lovers who have been with me ever since. However I started my career in pop and my love for that music has never left me. So although this first compilation is made up of recent material, like the title of the first track, it feels like I’ve found my way home. Or is that my “second home”?’
