Spies Like Us
Read by Peter Curtin, Hugh Lunn tells the story of his remarkable journey in “Spies Like Us”, as broadcast on Ian ‘Macca’ McNamara’s Australia All Over radio programme each Sunday morning.
In the 21st century China is the story. From the 2008 Olympic Games, to Tibet, pollution, to incredible economic growth…it’s all happening in China But it wasn’t always so. Back in 1964 – -when Bob Dylan and the Beatles were changing the times – two likely lads from Brisbane set out to see the world. They arrived in Hong Kong, cub reporter Hughie Lunn and his best mate, Davis Cup tennis player Kenny Fletcher.
The two boys hit the Honk Kong nightlife, gambled in Macau, and were mistaken for spies. They even peeked over the border into the dreaded and secretive “ Red” China where Chairman Mao and the Communists were in control, and where Australians were known as “running dog lackeys of the Yankee Imperialist aggressors”.
Australia didn’t even recognise China back then- that didn’t happen till 1972 when Gough Whitlam became PM. The Cold War was at its frostiest in 1964 No one knew what went on behind the Bamboo Curtain, so Hughie Lunn decided to go in and find out. Armed only with a book of Henry Lawson poems and a surname that translated into the powerful word “Dragon”, he charmed his way into Red China, then into Beijing, and even inside the Forbidden City at Tiananmen Square.
You won’t want to miss a moment of it…..
