Searching For The Map (Nat Bartsch)
Pianist/composer Nat Bartsch celebrates the release of her three-track single Searching for the Map, available digitally on ABC Classic on 15 May.
Recorded in the early days of COVID-19, Nat captures the uncertainty and heartbreak of Australians affected by the events of 2020. This is Nat’s first release since her acclaimed 2018 album of lullabies, Forever and No Time At All.
Says Nat of the opening track:
“’Searching for the Map’ was written in the darkened, smoky summer days at the start of 2020, as the Australian bushfires raged across the country. Its title refers to both the geographical map, as we all checked to see whether our loved ones’ homes were affected; and also a metaphorical map – as a country, struggling to find a way forward with responding to climate change.
“The second track, ‘The End of the Decade’ was written on New Year’s Eve, reflecting upon the decade that passed both for me personally and at a global level. Who would have imagined that a few months on, this title would represent such a unprecedented moment in history”.
The pieces were played on a restored 100-year-old Tasmanian upright piano, with its unique pedal, wood and felt noises creating a gentle, raw and atmospheric sound. The tracks were engineered and mixed by Andrew Pollock and mastered by Lachlan Carrick.
This recording previews new works Nat is creating for her 2021 postclassical album, Hope, due for release in February (ABC Classic).
On June 19, she will also be releasing Forever More, a jazz re-interpretation of her lullabies (ABC Jazz).
