Hymns From A Country Church

When we think of the great hymns, often we think first of the stirring sound of massed voices joining in the praise of God. But we don’t need to be standing in a magnificent cathedral to be moved by the power of hymns. Nor do they need the sound of the grand organ to bring them to life. On the contrary. This music made in simplicity and sincerity can enrich our worship wherever we find ourselves.

In this recording, we have come to the great hymn tunes with fresh ears, remembering how they have spoken to us and been part of our traditions across the years, but also looking to encounter them in new ways. We’ve chosen instruments that are familiar and inviting, either as part of our own musical experience (piano, guitar) or as echoes of the folk traditions which have grown up within communities to express the most profound moments in their journey together (fiddle, tin whistle, uilleann pipes).

Some of these tunes fit with more than one set of words; sometimes words may be sung to more than one tune. Perhaps you will find your own words! Whatever these hymns mean to you, we invite you to join us in celebrating these glorious melodies.
