Celtic Road
SunasSarah Calderwood
Súnas is a folk band who have been delighting audiences around Australia for more than ten years with their fresh and exciting take on traditional Celtic music. Based in Brisbane, Súnas are favourites on the folk festival circuit, as well as performing regularly in south-east Queensland. They have also toured internationally, including to Russia and to the legendary Perthshire Amber Festival in Scotland.
A contemporary musical journey beyond the Celtic crossroads
On this album, singer Sarah Calderwood and fellow Súnas members Bridget Masters, Manny McAllister and Paul Brandon perform contemporary Celtic repertoire with some unexpected deviations. The Cure’s Lovesong takes on a mystical, haunting beauty. Kevin Crawford from Lúnasa is a guest soloist on Jimmy MacCarthy’s Ride On, merged (in typical Súnas fashion) with a version of the traditional song Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Hair. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Benjamin Northey is featured on Bushes and Briars, and leading Australian folk and pop musicians including bassist Lee Novak from Savage Garden also make an appearance.
Also included with this studio recording is a bonus DVD of Súnas live in concert.
