Celtic Divas
Sarah Calderwood
There can be few more haunting and evocative sounds in all of music than that of the female Celtic folksingers, their voices drifting out of some mystical past and being reborn on iPods in the present. Celtic Divas showcases some of the biggest names in Irish, English and Scottish music in songs that emerge from the timeless and windswept landscapes of a Britain that still lives on in the modern imagination. It begins with the incredible Irish duo Lumiere, featuring Eilis Kennedy and Pauline Scanlon, and from there it’s as if each track, from Heidi Talbot’s sublime Parting Song to Eddi Reader’s unforgettable Auld Lang Syne, speaks of a beauty and a poignancy of nations steeped in love, loss and joy.
