The Dili Allstars
Not too many bands this year will come out with a personal endorsement from both Australian Pop Princess Kylie Minogue and the President of East Timor José Ramos-Horta. Such a band is Australian/East Timorese musical act The Dili Allstars, who will mark their 15-year career by releasing a Best Of collection.
Half of the Dili Allstars members are East Timorese refugees and the other half, Australians whose primary focus has always been about raising funds and awareness for aid projects in East Timor, rather than chart positions or T-shirt sales.
The band was formed by Paul Stewart and Gil Santos. Paul Stewart is the brother of Tony Stewart, 21, who was one of the six journalists murdered by Indonesian forces in the hamlet of Balibo, East Timor in 1975. Gil Santos lost his father in the same invasion, being left with just a soccer ball and guitar before he and his family fled to Portugal. The seven piece Dili Allstars formed in 1998 after Stewart met Santos on the day resistance leader Xanana Gusmão was captured by Indonesian forces, and they decided to use music as a tool to help raise awareness about the plight of the East Timorese.
The Dili Allstars famously appeared alongside Kylie Minogue and John Farnham at the ‘Tour of Duty’ concert for peacekeeping troops in Dili. The band was Australia’s official representative at East Timor’s Independence Concert in 2002. One Dili Allstars tune, Liberdade, has taken on the status of unofficial East Timorese national anthem, after the band released it to help pro-independence campaigners in the lead-up to the controversial Referendum in 1999 which saw the country break free of Indonesian rule after 25 bloody years.
The Best of the Dili Allstars features a powerful cover of Rose Tattoo’s We Can’t Be Beaten as well as East Timorese versions of the Bob Marley classic No Woman No Cry (La Bele Tanis), Helen Reddy’s I Am Woman (Hau Abut) and Mondo Rock’s Cool World. From the anthem Liberdade to the controversial Advance Australia Where? this CD is a celebration of freedom, justice and the East Timorese people.
