It can be said that the enormous appeal of Country Music, particularly great Australian country music, is the realness and genuiness of the artists and their songs. Songs that touch on blue collar themes, core values, family, everyday challenges and triumphs, mateship and stories that celebrate the great country we live in.
Corey’s Colum’s music touches on all of these things and like so many great Australian songwriters, he’s as real as it gets. He had a traditional family upbringing in Bunbury, Western Australian, living with mum, dad and his brother & sister and was brought up on core values and hard work.
As well as being a recording artist and songwriter, Colum is a plumber by trade. Over the years he has also dabbled in hard labor activities like carpentry, concreting, fencing, welding and often spends time in “Shutdown”, where he uses all these skills to help maintain and repair big work spaces and production plants.
Now based in the mining town of Karratha Western Australia, with a young family of his own, Corey Colum is ready to fulfil his musical dreams.
Corey Colum first picked up a guitar at the age of ten and has grown up around the music of Australian icons such as John Williamson and Troy Cassar-Daley as well as country legends Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn.
He wrote his first song at 15 and honed his craft playing local gigs in Bunbury before winning a local “Road to Tamworth” heat and heading to the Tamworth Country Music festival.
Corey caught the eye of ABC Music when performing at the Telstra Road To Tamworth Grand Final in early 2009. The label’s A&R / Label Manager for country music Tim Holland was a judge at the event. He was immediately impressed with Colum’s connection with an audience which voted him the event’s “People’s Choice Award” winner.
“It’s one thing to sing about a blue collar lifestyle, and another to truly live it while you sing about it. Corey most definitely falls into the later category and this comes through in the music he writes and performs. The audience believes him and therefore connects with what he does”, says Holland.
On the same night, the judging panel, which also included the likes of CMC Program Director Tim Daley, CMA Board member and leading Australian promoter/agent Rob Potts, GRAMMY nominated producer Mark Moffatt and international representatives from Universal Music Publishing in Nashville, awarded Colum the Road To Tamworth Songwriters Award. This gave him the opportunity to perform at the CMA Music Festival and write with Universal Music Publishing’s gun songwriters in Nashville.
Shortly after the event, Colum was offered a recording contract with ABC Music and he gone on to record his first album with the label.
Corey Colum’s Nashville experience provided the perfect foundation for him to then get together with premier Australian songwriters Colin Buchanan, Matt Scullion, James Gillard and the producer of his debut album, the multi award winning and acclaimed Australian producer, Garth Porter.
Porter’s abilities and achievements as a producer are well know to most in the Australian Country Music business having produced multiple hit and award winning albums for the likes of Australian country icons James Blundell, Sara Storer and of course Lee Kernaghan.
