Written during the summer of 1943, this symphony is regarded as one of the composer’s finest. Whilst scholars may argue as to its level of tragedy versus optimism, what cannot be denied is its compositional brilliance. This performance, by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Nicholas Braithwaite is critically acclaimed and brings depth and poignancy to this epic work.

When ABC Classic FM announced the original Classic 100 survey back in 2001, it was barely a month before the launch of the iPod, which has transformed the listening habits of the nation. Now, music – from the classics to pop to jazz, you name it – is in everyone’s pockets, travelling with us wherever we go. It has undoubtedly changed the way we listen to music, but more importantly, has it changed the music we love? A decade on from the original survey, this latest Classic 100, as voted by listeners to ABC Classic FM, provides the answer. This 8CD set contains highlights from all 100 of the pieces on the list – over 10 hours of music – and represents the definitive anthology of the classical hits that Australians love, over and above all others.
